FAQ - About your quilt top
-
What is the maximum quilt size?
Our maximum quilting width is 120 inches. There is no limit to length.
-
Are there any requirements for my quilt top?
Remove any hard objects or embellishments (buttons, sequins, crystals, stray pins, etc) that could potentially break a needle.
If your quilt top is not obviously directional, please let us know which side you consider to be the "top" by attaching a note to the top edge with a safety pin.
-
What else can I do to make sure my quilt comes out looking its best?
Make sure your quilt is as square as possible. We do our best to straighten and smooth as we go, but fullness in your seams or borders may lead to wrinkles or bunching in your quilted top.
Secure your seams! Make sure you are back-stitching or stay-stitching when a seam runs out to the outside edge. This will help prevent the seams from opening up or pulling apart when handling on the frame.
Clip loose threads from the backside of your quilt top. This is especially important if you have light colored or thin fabrics. Strands of thread or unraveled fabric edges can show through the fabric and distract from the finished look, and are near impossible to remove once quilting has been applied.
Take the time to press all your seams nice and flat. Seams do not necessarily need to be pressed open. Twists in the seams or overly bulky intersections can be felt through the finished top. For bulky intersections it is helpful if you "spin" or "fan" the seam allowance to more evenly distribute the fabric.
FAQ - About your backing
-
What size should my backing be?
Your backing MUST be a minimum 8 inches longer and wide than your quilt top (4 inches overhang on all sides). This is required so that we have enough room to attach leaders and side clamps.
Don't be afraid to leave your backing even larger than the required 8 inch overhang; 10 inches or more is actually preferred. This will give us enough space to test the tension outside of the quilting area. We will send back the excess with your finished quilt. If you intend to do a wrapped binding using the backing, please include extra length and width to accommodate.
-
Can I use a pieced backing?
Absolutely! If possible, we prefer horizontal seams on the backing but this is not a requirement. Please be aware that we cannot guarantee centering of the quilt top over your backing seams.
We also offer an optional service to piece your backing for you. You must still provide the necessary amount of fabric to get the required 8 inch minimum overhang. See our Services & Pricing page for more details on this service.
-
Can I use Minky fabric for backing?
We do accept Minky, preferably for small quilts only. These fabrics are very stretchy and harder to control at larger sizes. Please increase the backing size so there is at least 6 inches overhang on all sides in order to help combat stretching/warping.
Other luxe fabrics that have a stiff webbing will not be accepted at this time.
-
Do I need to square up my backing?
Yes. This backing is the first thing loaded onto the quilt frame and therefore sets the foundation for the entire quilt. The top/bottom edges are most important - please make sure they are as straight and parallel as possible. Variations on the side edges are less important as long as there is still the minimum required overhang along the entire edge.
FAQ - About submitting an order
-
Do I need to choose a thread color?
No. You can request a general color, but we will choose the best matching thread from the threads we have in stock. The same thread will be used for both the front and back.
Generally we will select a thread color that best blends in on your quilt top. If you are using a Minky backing, we recommend matching the Minky color to hide any "bearding" or fiber pull-through.
-
How should I pack up my quilt order? Do I need to sandwich the layers ahead of time?
Keep your layers separate (top, batting, and backing). Please do not preassemble your sandwich! We load one layer at a time onto our quilting frame.
Double check there are no stray pins or embellishments in any layer. If you want to designate a specific edge as the "top" for the top and/or backing, please mark it by attaching a note to the top edge with a safety pin.
If you are sending in your order by mail, please include your name or some other indication to tell us which quilt order is in the box. Including a printed copy of your quilting estimate is the best option, but not required.
-
Can I make changes after dropping off my order?
If we have not yet started on your quilt order, changes can be made free of charge. Please make every effort to contact us as soon as possible when you decide to make a change. Any modifications after we have started your order that require removing stitches will incur a $40/hour charge to undo any stitching.
FAQ - Additional Information
-
How are my quilt measurements taken?
When giving us your quilt dimensions, use the outside measurement of your quilt top. We will verify the dimensions once we have your quilt on hand and start your order. If there are any major discrepancies, the actual size will be reflected on your final invoice.
-
Will my quilt be trimmed after quilting?
This is up to you! By default, we will trim your finished quilt up to the edge so it is ready to attach binding. If you would prefer to trim yourself or need a specific excess width left attached (i.e. for turned binding), make sure you specify this on your quilt order or in person at drop-off.
-
When is payment due?
Payment for orders using local drop-off/pick-up is due at the time of pick-up. For shipped orders, payment must be made before we return ship your finished quilt back to you.
Local orders may pay by cash, check, or card. For shipped orders, please pay by card using the link provided with your emailed final invoice.

Are there any allergens in the quilting space?
We are smoke-free and dog-free. There are cats in the home so please be advised if you have a severe allergy. While we strive to keep the quilting space clean, we cannot guarantee that your quilt will be completely free of these allergens.
